Our overnight flight from Toronto was a complete nightmare involving crying babies and more crying babies. We barely slept, barely ate. The moment we landed in Barcelona, we were both starving and exhausted. Decided what we need some caffeine boost, we headed to our first brunch spot - Alsur Café!
Before our departure, I spent quite some time on Instagram and I found this café through a Barcelona travel/food blog! I immediately fell in love with the ambient and also the colourful floor tiles!
One thing I noticed in Spain: I like their coffee (beans?) way better. Smoother but still strong. In Canada, I tend to get served coffee that tastes bitter/sour, which I don't like. Personal preference probably, but after I came back to Canada and spoke with a few friends, they agreed with me. AND, it is a lot cheaper (just like everything else). A latte usually costs me $5-6 in Canada, but around €1,50-2,50 (yes, tax included!) here.
We ordered Chicken Waffle and Donut Burger along with our latte.
I wasn't sure if it was because of the hunger, but the food was mind-blowingly delicious.
the fried chicken was so tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. The sweetness of the syrup on the waffle and Jalapeño somehow blended.
The Donut Burger was, again, a perfect mixture of savory and sweet.
The thin sugar crust on the donut, the juicy patty, and the heavenly smell of the bacon all complemented each other.
Their motto, "Lo Que Quieras, Cuando Quieras" which roughly translated to "Whatever you want, whenever you want", became our favourite hashtag throughout our trip. #LQQCQ

The next brunch spot is another Insta-famous one - Brunch & Cake!
Due to its popularity, we had to wait in line for about 45 minutes. Note: They don't take reservations, and the seatings are very limited. We had to share a table with others.
(The above image is from their website. I did not take a photo inside as it was very crowded.)
We tried their lattes, matcha latte and vanilla latte. The matcha latte tasted pretty plain, and the vanilla latte was over-sweetened.
I found their açaí bowl pretty average, nothing too special. The salmon bagel and matcha banana pancake my friends ordered were alright.
Overall, their food was more Instagram-worthy than it is tasty. The food is indeed beautifully presented, but if you are a huge foodie, this place would most likely disappoint you a little.

On the second day in Madrid, we managed to find some time to sit down and have a nice, chill morning at Federal Café. This spot was actually recommended me by a Madrid local on Instagram.
Federal Café situates in a hipster neighborhood called Malasaña. It is a vibrant area, full of lively bars and cafés.
Federal Café
I should probably mention that their menu is very thoughtful. All the items are labelled with possible allergens such as gluten.
Throughout our trip, we got very little sleep and required constantly recharge with caffeine. While awaiting for our food to arrive, we had some fun time writing postcards.
Rye toast with avocado and poached eggs with macadamia nuts| Eggs Florentine
You can probably tell this café is very health-oriented already. The 'Eggs Florentine' was a baked dish with spinach and eggs inside a cute cast iron pan. Protein-loaded! The food was amazing and the atmosphere was very relaxing. We stayed for quite some time.
